About this artwork

This lady is the only female in de Braij’s group of four portraits of a Dutch family in the Scottish National Gallery. The inscription on the bottom left of the panel states that she is forty-seven years old, and that the portrait was painted in 1663. Her round features are rendered with a lively touch, and her eyes have a vitality that is testimony to de Braij’s skill as a portraitist. Her matron’s cap signals her position as a married woman.
