About this artwork

The Review of the Scottish Volunteer Regiments by Queen Victoria was the defining social event of 1860 in Edinburgh. Among the Artists’ Company mustered in Holyrood Park was the landscape painter Sam Bough. This atmospheric picture was the most ambitious of all the commemorative souvenirs of the occasion. Crouching on the left is Bough’s pet bulldog Madam Sacchi, often included in his paintings as alternative form of signature.
