Richard Parkes Bonington
Venice: The Grand Canal
About this artwork
Bonington was profoundly affected by a visit to Venice in 1826. A larger version of this view, made in 1827, became the best known of all his Italian compositions and was much admired by JMW Turner (1775–1851). Despite its superb quality, the attribution of this free oil study has been questioned. Like the larger picture, it was once owned by Turner’s great Scottish patron Hugh Munro of Novar (1797–1864).
