Salvator Rosa

Landscape with Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Paul the Hermit

About this artwork

Rosa was largely responsible for popularising the subject of wild landscapes inhabited by hermits and bandits. Here he shows the meeting of Saint Anthony Abbot, the fourth-century founder of monasticism, with Saint Paul, the first hermit, in the wilderness he had made his home. The raven that brought bread for Paul can just be made out above the saints.
