Yvonne Murray, b. 1964. Athlete
About this artwork
Edinburgh-born Murray was one of Britain's most successful athletes during the 1980s and 1990s. She won 3000m bronze, silver and gold medals at European Championships, World Cups and the Olympic Games. In this collage, Murray's photograph is interwoven by thousands of postcards of Jayne Mansfield, the glamorous Hollywood starlet who was killed in a car accident in 1967. David Mach enjoyed the contrast between Yvonne, 'so kind of nice' , and Mansfield, 'a sexy, busty blonde that your mother would be disturbed by if you brought her home'.
