Gavin Hastings, b. 1962. Rugby player
About this artwork
Gavin Hastings retired from international rugby in 1995 having played sixty-one matches for his country, twenty of them as captain. David Mach has shown Hastings against a background made from postcards of a purple heather-covered hillside. Mach said of Hastings, 'He's a big rugged man, a tough bloke; it's a tough game.' Of his choice of postcard, he said, It's a twee thing, a preconceived idea about Scotland; rolling heather and pretty glens. That fitted with the photograph and physically the two things worked well together'.
