About this artwork

In 1941, Colquhoun was demobilised from the Royal Army Medical Corps on health grounds, and went straight to London to join his long-term partner, Robert MacBryde. Colquhoun’s self-portrait probably dates from this time in early 1941. In London, the Roberts stayed with celebrated art collector Peter Watson - meeting many of the leading artists and poets of their time, and entering into the social whirl of the Soho bars and clubs.
