Mar Lodge, group in the doorway of the smoking room including the Prince and Princess of Wales

About this artwork

Pictured in the doorway of the smoking room at Mar Lodge are the Prince and Princess of Wales on their first visit to Scotland in 1863. The less conspicuous figure, seated between the two royals, is the Countess of Fife, their generous host. The Scottish dignitaries standing either side of the doorway resemble a guard of honour attending a solemn occasion. A rigid composition is enlivened by the mysterious man, probably a servant, peering through a window on the left and the striped socks of some of the guests.
