The reverse of this medal shows the Duke of Cumberland as a Roman warrior attacking the Hydra – a mythical many-headed monster, here used as a symbol of rebellion. The city in the background is Carlisle, just south of the Scottish border. In December 1745 the bulk of the Jacobite army retreated, leaving the Manchester regiment behind in Carlisle to face Cumberland’s cannon. Forced to surrender, these Jacobites, mainly English volunteers, suffered the harshest reprisals of the Rising.
