About this artwork
Robert David Macdonald was born in Elgin and educated in England and Germany. He joined the Glasgow's Citizens' Theatre in 1972 where he directed many productions as well as acting and providing new translations. This oil sketch was made for the large group portrait of the three artistic Directors of the Citizens' Theatre, which was commissioned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
