About this artwork

This is one of four views of the house and estate of Yester in East Lothian. Taken from the east this view shows the stables on the right and Yester Mains is in the middle distance. The set of views is presumed to have been painted before 1685 when the old house (shown in one of the paintings) was demolished to make way for the present house. Although great improvements were made during the eighteenth century to the estate, this picture is evidence that the planting of trees and the enclosing of fields had begun well before the end of the seventeenth century.
