About this artwork
The vibrant colours of this canvas suggest that these three men lead creative lives. The sitters were the artistic directors of Glasgow's Citizens Theatre, world-famous for the originality of its productions. Robert David MacDonald (left) was renowned for his translations and adaptations, Philip Prowse (centre) is a highly respected director and designer, while Giles Havergal (right) is a noted director and leading actor. They could be sitting on one of their stage sets, or in a stylised natural landscape - the artist leaves it to the viewer to decide.
