Agnes Miller Parker

Pigsty

About this artwork

Many of Miller Parker’s early wood engravings from the 1920s show the stylistic influence of Cubism and Vorticism, including this print made in 1926. This illustration turns the simple subject of pigs on a farm into an almost abstract design through the use of sharp angles and geometric shapes. It is likely that Miller Parker’s work from this time was also influenced by the wood engravings of the English artists Noel Rooke (1881–1953) and Edward Wadsworth (1889-1949), both of whom created similar striking images in black and white with little tone.
