Elizabeth Blackadder

Flowers on an Indian Cloth

About this artwork

Blackadder became well-known for her paintings of flowers, which began to appear in her drawings and paintings from the 1960s. After acquiring several Persian rugs in 1964, Blackadder began a series of paintings inspired by their rich colours and patterns. At that stage in her work, as with Flowers on an Indian Cloth, flowers were generally incorporated to form an overall decorative composition. The 1960s were an era of optimism, which is reflected in the artist's use of bright colours.
