Samuel Bough had no formal artistic training, but his natural gift for drawing and painting brought him enormous success in his lifetime. Bough was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1856, and became a full member in 1875. He was made Vice-President of the Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1878. Bough was a controversial and extroverted character, renowned for his bohemian lifestyle. One of his contemporaries observed: ‘Spectacled and burly in his rough clothes ... he was a figure that commanded notice. … He loved to put himself in opposition… and trample priorities under foot. …But this…was no more than a husk: …inside the burr was a man of warm feelings, notable powers of mind and much culture.’
