'Self-portrait with Lovers'
About this artwork
Williams’s photographs are often carefully conceived and formally constructed. This photograph is an example of this, and can be considered a self-portrait. The photographer’s tired-looking jacket hanging on his tripod watches a distant couple, unsharp, embracing on the beach in his favourite location of Portobello, Edinburgh. In the still image, the elements are momentarily linked to one another, despite being otherwise unrelated.
