About this artwork

The profile portrait of Charles on the obverse side is taken from the French ‘Amor et Spes’ medal of 1748, itself based upon the bust sculpted by Lemoyne in 1747. The reverse shows a withered oak tree with a vigorous sapling springing up at its side.  Above the design is the Latin word ‘REVIRESCIT’, meaning ‘it flourishes again’. The oak was understood as a symbol of the Stuarts – Charles II had hidden in an oak tree after the battle of Worcester in 1651. The medal was ordered in 1749 by the Oak Society, a Jacobite club which met at the Crown and Anchor tavern near the Strand in London. Surviving bills show that the members purchased at least six gold, 102 silver and 283 copper medals.
