Calderari Gypsy Woman and Child, Sintesti, Romania
About this artwork
Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert spent many hours documenting the independent existence of the Kalderash gypsies of Romania during the 1990s. These photographs form a vivid contrast to the media's by-now-clichéd broadcasts on the depressing conditions in Romania's orphanages. Sutton-Hibbert shows us a community that subsists on a bare minimum of material comforts but nevertheless looks proudly on the world. It is full of vigour and a capacity for enjoying life. Old men, children, beautiful young women challenge the viewer with their steady gaze. The mother and child in this picture similarly sport happy, teasing expressions.
