About this artwork

Geddes’s portrait was conceived as a preliminary study for a large canvas entitled The Discovery of the Regalia of Scotland which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821. The finished picture, now destroyed, commemorated the rediscovery of the Honours of Scotland on 4 February 1818. Scott instigated and attended the formal opening of the chest in which the crown, sceptre and other relics had been concealed since 1707 in the Crown Room of Edinburgh Castle.
