About this artwork

This medal was commissioned by The Art Union of London in 1865 and was posthumously awarded to David Roberts in 1875. On one side it shows a portrait of Roberts in profile. The other displays the scene from his lithograph, ‘The Letter Writer, Cairo’. The medal is part of a series commissioned to promote public interest in the arts. In total thirty medals were issued. Roberts was an artist whose work was inspired by his travels in Europe and the Middle East. Many of his sketches and watercolours were made into lithographs, which were extremely popular at the time.
