About this artwork

In this image Cadell has depicted a sailor with a pipe in his mouth. The vibrant blue of his uniform is contrasted against the flash of red hair from beneath his cap. Cadell joined the Royal Scots in 1915 and produced a series of drawings of army life before leaving for service in France. Twenty of these drawings were published in 1916 in the book, titled ‘Jack and Tommy’, which was sold to benefit the Red Cross.
