About this artwork

Dürer’s ‘The Circumcision’ was used as the basis for this print which is dated (or numbered) ‘[15]41’ in reverse, but the watermark on the paper used for this impression is similar to ones used in Arnhem from 1604 to 1614. This print is interesting because of the way it differs from the iconography of Dürer’s woodcut. The engraver has removed any reference to Dürer and replaced the high priest with a bishop wearing a mitre who turns his head towards us while handling a knife; he has also given the figures of Mary and Christ halos. As the changes emphasise Mary and the bishop, they possibly indicate a Catholic interpretation of the theme that would fit into a Counter-Reformation context.
