About this artwork
‘The Engraved Passion’, a series of sixteen engravings in small format executed between 1507 and 1512, was one of the most successful sets of prints by Dürer. Numerous copies are known. Unlike Dürer’s three books in woodcut, this series is not accompanied by a text. For Dürer the Passion of Christ was one of the most important subjects of his art. Apart from ‘The Engraved Passion’, he designed two series of woodcuts, ‘The Large Passion’ and ‘The Small Passion’.
