About this artwork
Although no specific literary text has been identified as a source for this print, the subject of purchasing carnal pleasures was often depicted towards the end of the fifteenth century. The old man digs into his purse to produce coins for the payment. They will meet the open palm of the young woman, who innocently diverts her gaze from her admirer, as if declining his advances. Her other hand clutching a purse leaves no doubt as to her true intention. The liaison takes place in a forest, outside of a town pictured in the background. Dürer’s monogram is quite small, just visible below the folds of the woman’s dress.
