About this artwork
Dürer developed the technique, form and expression of his woodcutting to an unrivalled level of excellence during his life. It has been noted that ‘Dürer effectively made woodcut an extension of engraving’ transferring the engraved line of the copperplate into a line cut in relief into the woodblock. The extremely detailed and delicate foliage of the trees and shrubs, and the dense parallel hatching in the shades demonstrate these skills. Consequently, Dürer was the first artist to consistently sign not only his engravings but also his woodcuts, transforming what was considered a craft to an art.
