About this artwork

Sometimes the damaged parts of woodblocks were re-cut and new elements inserted. Two states of the same block for this print have been recorded, one with the date 1512, and a later one with the date removed. This impression is dated 1512. On close inspection, it can be determined that it is not an original impression, which would show the date level. Instead, the numbers slope down slightly to the right indicating an undescribed state with the date re-cut and inserted into the original block. This is probably due to the woodblock having been damaged through heavy use, being used also as a title page for a book in 1514. The watermark of the sheet suggests a dating of around 1563 to 1565. The print once belonged to the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, whose stamp is on the reverse of the sheet.
