Paul Neagu

White Cardinal

About this artwork

This handmade sculpture-in-a-suitcase by Paul Neagu opens to reveal an imagined architectural structure, captured as both a pencil drawing and matchbox model. Neagu grew up under Stalinist military occupation and Communism in Bucharest. In 1969 Richard Demarco, promoter of the visual and performing arts, invited Neagu to show his work at his Edinburgh gallery. White Cardinal includes local Edinburgh newspapers as one of its recycled materials. Neagu left Romania permanently in 1970, moving to London. This work dates from both before and after this move, making its suitcase form even more poignant.
