About this artwork
Originally published in book form, this contemporary lithograph is one of a series which parodies lines from Shakespeare to mock Dr Robert Knox (1793-1862) and his associations with the so-called "body snatchers" William Burke and William Hare. Burke and Hare were infamous for the murder and delivery of bodies to the anatomy lecturer and ethnologist Dr Knox for dissection. An earlier lithograph in the series declared, "The present impression on the minds of the people is, that one gentleman stands in the same relation to Burke, that the murderer of Banquo did to Macbeth".
