About this artwork
Dundee-born commercial photographer George Dobson Valentine emigrated to New Zealand in 1883. First settling in Nelson, he later moved to Auckland in 1885. This view of Auckland is likely to be one of a series of views of the city which he undertook that same year. The series formed part of an album, "Photographs of New Zealand". Dobson also sent a collection of photographs to London in 1886 for inclusion the New Zealand section of the ‘Colonial and Indian’ Exhibition in London. The net result was to establish him as a prominent member of the Auckland photographic community. This image was taken from Mount Eden, the highest natural point in Auckland. An extinct volcano, it offers 360-degree views of Auckland and is thus a favourite tourist spot.
