About this artwork

This etching of Toledo a is from Strang’s ‘Seven Spanish Etchings’, which were published in portfolios by J. MacLehose and Sons and T. & R. Annan, Glasgow (1913). The series was the artist’s contribution to the fashionable genre of architectural etching and engraving, a subject area which, in general, he classified as less interesting. However, on visiting the picturesque Spanish towns Segovia, Burgos, Ronda and Toledo in 1912, Strang felt the views suitable subject matter for a set. In his architectural and landscape subjects Strang’s concern was to capture a tranquil, homely beauty rather than the grandeur and awe so often associated with this genre.
