About this artwork
This engraving depicts the young Queen Henrietta Maria, with three of her daughters, Mary (the Princess Royal), Anne and Elizabeth. In total she had nine children. Anne died aged three from tuberculosis while Elizabeth, who was kept prisoner in England throughout her childhood during the English Civil War, also contracted the disease and died aged fourteen. Mary subsequently died in December 1660. The queen holds a lily, the flower of France, and stands beside a table on which a number of symbolic objects are placed including a rosary, an open book and a watch.
