About this artwork
This etching shows the Norman North Transept in Winchester Cathedral. In his interiors Cameron liked to contrast the irregular patterns of light cast from a window with the rich darkness of the shadows, and accentuate the mass and strength of the architecture. Throughout his life Cameron had a deep religious faith, and his interest in church interiors reflected his belief that beauty and decoration were essential elements in the practice of worship. In later life he promoted the embellishment of Scottish churches, acting as Vice-Convenor of the Church of Scotland’s Advisory Committee on Artistic Questions from 1934 until his death.
