About this artwork

This print is the fifth of ten etchings from Cameron's 'Belgian Set'. Now a small village, Damme was once the fortified port of Bruges. This print shows the square tower of the church of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Hemelvaart (Our Lady of the Assumption) as a white mass against a velvety black sky, meticulously cross-hatched with the etching needle. The 'Belgian set' was the last of Cameron’s 'sets' and contains some of his greatest etching achievements. The set formed the centrepiece of an exhibition of Cameron's prints at Connell's London galleries in 1907, and was highly praised by contemporary critics.
