A noted fiddler from an early age, Niel Gow achieved considerable fame in his lifetime, travelling across the country playing at balls and other festivities. He was also a popular composer of reels and strathspeys which were in great demand; his published collections having enormous sales. Described as a lively and enthusiastic player he was also known for accompanying his playing with a sudden shout, described as being able to ‘instantly electrify the dancers’.
