About this artwork
In creating physical objects that represent the immaterial, Anish Kapoor seeks to evoke a sense of mystery, meanwhile stimulating a sensory response. This sculpture exemplifies these key motivations. Made of polystyrene and concrete, the entire surface of this mixed media form is coated in a soot black powdered pigment. The use of a single colour all over affects our perceptions. As Kapoor explains: ‘the edge acts in a very particular way… it’s as if the monochrome spaces come to be heavier, deeper, darker than the object that contains them’. Looking into this sculpture from above, its interior space cannot be fully determined; it has an apparently infinite, immaterial depth.
