James VI and I, 1566 - 1625. King of Scotland 1567 - 1625. King of England and Ireland 1603 - 1625

About this artwork

The son of Mary, Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley, James survived a turbulent childhood to become one of Scotland's most successful monarchs. In 1589 James VI travelled to Upslo (now Oslo) to marry Anne, daughter of Frederick II, King of Denmark and Norway. They returned to Scotland on 1 May 1590. With the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603 and the unification of the crowns, James and Anne became king and queen of England, Scotland and Ireland. This small portrait, paired with one of Anne (PG 1110), is attributed to Adrian Vanson who worked in Edinburgh as a court painter from 1584. Originally the two roundels may have been hinged, forming the lid and base of a circular box.
