King Charles I and his distinguished courtier Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel were both enthusiastic collectors of works by Dürer. The famous ‘Self-portrait’ of 1498 and the ‘Portrait of his Father’ were presented to Arundel in 1636 by the Nuremberg city council as gifts for Charles I. Before handing them over to the King, Arundel had copies painted for his own collection. In 1645 Wenceslaus Hollar made this etching after Arundel’s copy of Dürer’s ‘Self-portrait’. Arundel, who was a keen print collector, was particularly interested in paintings and drawings by Dürer.
