About this artwork

A naval officer from Perthshire, Adam Duncan’s career had remained worthy but unremarkable until his last posting, when he emerged as one of Britain’s great naval heroes. His victory over the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797 was a crucial practical and symbolic victory in the struggle against Revolutionary France who were allied with the Dutch after the Dutch Republic was invaded by French forces in 1795. This print is based upon an earlier work by John Hoppner, an English portrait painter (1758-1810).
