About this artwork
In 1913, the photographer James Craig Annan visited Spain with the artist William Strang. This photogravure, ‘Group on a Hill Road’, is one of several images of Spanish subjects in which the figures appear to be unaware of the camera, yet in reality have been carefully positioned to create a balanced composition. Annan never found the time to produce and sell an album of his Spanish photographs, but the photographer Alfred Stieglitz published eight of these images in the photo magazine ‘Camera Work’ in 1914.
