About this artwork

This image gives an accurate impression of the architecture of the banqueting house; the window gables are shown as alternating between triangular and segmental, a detail still seen today on the building. The depiction of the executioner’s block is also correct as contemporary accounts describe that Charles was executed on a low block - he had to lie down flat rather than kneel, adding to the humiliation. The printed text refers to the murder and martyrdom of the King and so the illustrations were probably originally from Royalist broadsheets or pamphlets.
