About this artwork

When the book Eikon Basilike - The Pourtraiture of his sacred Maiestie in his solitudes and sufferings was published in the months following the King's execution, this is the image that was used as the frontispiece for the British edition. The image is heavily symbolic and shows Charles in royal regalia and as a martyr, kneeling with prayers emanating from his head holding a crown of thorns (indicating his suffering).

The book and related illustrations were produced in large quantities over the period 1649 to 1660 and ensured the late King's image was kept alive amongst the people.
