Duncan Grant

Duncan Grant, 1885 - 1978. Artist (Self-portrait)

About this artwork

Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibition in 1910 prompted Grant to adopt a more radical approach to line and colour. Experimentation with a variety of modern art styles quickly earned Grant a leading position among Britain’s progressive artists and thinkers. Behind his head is Matisse's Woman Seated in an Armchair (1917). Grant convinced fellow Bloomsbury Group member John Maynard Keynes to buy the Matisse painting from the 1918 sale of Degas’s personal collection.
