Peter Darrell, 1929 - 1987. Choreographer
About this artwork
Peter Darrell was the founder choreographer of Scottish Ballet. He was Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet from its founding in 1969 until his death in 1987. Committed to creating new work and showcasing emerging talent, he drew inspiration from tradition as well as the changing world around him. The dancer and choreographer Michael Clark has said Darrell ‘wanted to make work about the time in which we live.’ Clark credited Darrell with introducing him to the possibilities of choreography, following being cast by him aged 11 in Scottish Ballet’s The Nutcracker. This sculpture was commissioned by The Peter Darrell Trust which promotes Darrell’s work and encourages international companies to restage his ballets. Alison Murray Wells worked from the Trust’s archive of photographs to create this bust.
