Samuel Froggatt
About this artwork
Why should we conform? Craig Waddell wants to reclaim the formal portrait from outdated associations with power and gender stereotyping – and reinvent it. The series Masc explores queer identity, particularly in relation to masculinity, through formal portraiture. It was made almost wholly in Scotland, mostly between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The photographer says ‘Masc as a whole was borne out of my personal experience reconciling my non normative identity - so much of my personal discovery was fuelled by my interactions with my contemporaries, so I sought to explore and record that through portraiture’.
