The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence

About this artwork

Saint Lawrence (225-258), one of the seven deacons of Rome, suffered martyrdom on burning coals under Emperor Valerian. Elsheimer was inspired by Titian’s large altarpiece of the same subject, today in the Gesuiti Church in Venice. After having trained in Frankfurt, Elsheimer visited Venice and settled in Rome in 1600. This previously unknown painting has been rediscovered recently and is on public display for the first time.
