Soldat Alphonse Brosse Soldat Jean Boursaud 07:00 / 10.10.1914 Ambleny, Aisne, Picardie
About this artwork
For Shot at Dawn, Chloe Dewe Mathews documented the exact locations in Flanders and northern France where First World War soldiers accused of cowardice or desertion were executed. The portfolio consists of twenty-four prints and a book. Each photograph represents a specific site and memorialises those soldiers who were put to death for apparent military crimes. Today we recognise that many men were suffering from psychiatric illness brought on by the horrors of warfare.
The series was originally commissioned by the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford as part of 14-18 NOW, WWI Centenary Art Commissions.
