About this artwork

Bachelorette is typical of France-Lise McGurn’s intuitive way of making paintings. Populated with figures drawn from her imagination, she worked out the composition on the two panels as she went, using a process of layering, erasing and reworking. There is no set story to be told. Instead, McGurn is interested in creating a sense of atmosphere and drama. Her sources of inspiration are wide-ranging – from Italian paintings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to contemporary newspapers and magazines. The title, Bachelorette, is intended to be playful, with several possible references and interpretations.
