About this artwork

This sketchbook dates from Ramsay’s second trip to Italy and contains many landscape drawings and studies of architecture, Roman antiquities and sculpture. It also includes sketched copies after paintings by Rubens drawn on his return journey through Germany. Ramsay wrote extensive notes in the book, recording his thoughts on the scenery of the Tivoli region and the people he met while travelling. These included the Italian author Count Algarotti (1712-1764) and the writer and traveller Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762). He also made detailed technical notes about the different paint pigments that could be obtained in Italy.
