During the 1950s, William Turnbull produced a series of works which used the head as the starting point for an exploration of line and form. This is a monotype print. In this work, the artist has used balanced and deliberate brushstrokes, like plus and minus signs. Many of Turnbull’s ‘Head’ works were influenced by the artist’s collection of masks from different cultures, and he felt that masks had a great scope for conveying a range of expressions. The sense of equilibrium may be influenced by Turnbull’s interest in Eastern philosophies.
