About this artwork
In this landscape Turner plays with the transforming power of light. Snowdon, Wales’s highest mountain, lurks in the clouds at the upper right, while diagonal shafts of sunlight streak across the valley. The round tower of Dolbadarn Castle is lit up against the dark waters of Llyn Peris, close to the village of Llanberis. Turner toured Wales four times in the 1790s. This watercolour is based on sketches from 1799 and was engraved for Turner’s most ambitious print series, Picturesque Views in England and Wales in 1834.
